October Wildfire Safety Reminder from Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council

Get Involved – We Need You!

Wildfire season is now 12 months a year, and prevention starts at home—but it works best when we do it together. The Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council is seeking new members and active volunteers to help lead local fire safety and prevention efforts. Whether you have time, ideas, or energy to give, your participation directly supports programs that protect homes, neighborhoods, and natural spaces in Scripps Ranch.

What You Can Do at Home

· Create Defensible Space – Clear dry leaves, dead branches, and overgrown shrubs. Trim low tree limbs and maintain safe spacing between vegetation and structures.

· Use Fire-Resistant Materials – Choose roofing (asphalt, metal, or tile), ember-resistant vents, and tempered glass windows.

· Maintain Equipment & Property – Clean gutters and remove flammable debris. Inspect vehicles and tools for spark risks—especially off-road.

· Store Combustibles Safely – Keep firewood, propane tanks, and other flammables at least 30 feet from your home.

· Dispose of Smoking Materials Properly – Never toss cigarette butts outdoors or from vehicles.

What Our Neighborhood Can Do

· Thin Overgrown Areas – Reduce dense vegetation to improve forest health and decrease fire intensity.

· Create Firebreaks – Roads or cleared strips help stop fire spread and improve emergency access.

· Plan Smart Development – Support land-use decisions and building codes that reduce fire risk.

Education & Awareness Matter

· Spread the Word – Share safety tips with friends, HOAs, and community events.

· Report Risks Early – If you see dangerous behavior in fire-prone areas, report it right away.
